Our Legacy

A Heritage of Faith Since 1838

The history of Seventh Day Baptists in New Jersey stretches back to the seventeenth century, built upon a conviction to honor God's sacred Sabbath from Friday sundown to Saturday sunset.

"In October 1836, faithful believers from the Piscataway Seventh Day Baptist community met to establish a home for worship directly within Plainfield. By February 9, 1838, our local congregation was formally organized."

Our Historic Sanctuary

As the congregation flourished through the 19th century, construction began on our landmark sanctuary at 501 Central Avenue, built between 1890 and 1894. This magnificent Richardsonian Romanesque structure features striking Gothic Revival details, local masonry, and a prominent pyramidal-roofed bell tower that remains an iconic architectural landmark in Plainfield.

The principal benefactor of the building was George Babcock, the famous co-founder of the boiler manufacturer Babcock & Wilcox. Using specialized terra cotta produced by a Babcock-owned plant in upstate New York, the exterior and interior walls were enriched with unique architectural tile art and elaborate Gothic tracery across a soaring domed ceiling.

A Global Impact From Plainfield

Historically, our church has always looked outward. In 1899, the Plainfield congregation established the "Plainfield Mission" in Southern Africa, an industrial and educational effort that later became the historic Malamulo Mission, proving our long-standing dedication to international growth and community development.

Today, while navigating the challenges of preserving this magnificent, historic house of worship, our focus remains firmly on the true church: the living, breathing community of believers gathered together in God's love.
