The Freedom of Individual Conscience
Historically, Seventh Day Baptists embrace liberty of thought under the guidance of the Holy Spirit as foundational to true Christian discipleship. Rather than requiring strict adherence to binding, human-made creeds, we encourage open discussion, deep study of the Scriptures, and the individual's freedom of conscience to determine and obey God's perfect will.
Our Final Authority is the Word of GodOur Core Understandings
Derived from our shared journey through the Holy Scriptures
The Triune God
We believe in one infinite, perfect Creator God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God desires to share His perfect love through a deeply personal relationship with everyone.
The Holy Bible
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and our final authority in all matters of Christian faith and local practice. Jesus Christ is the supreme interpreter of God's will for humanity.
Sin and Redemption
We recognize that sin separates mankind from God. Salvation is an entirely free gift of God's redeeming love, completed by Jesus Christ's death and resurrection on the cross, and received purely through faith and repentance.
Believer's Baptism
We practice baptism solely for believers by full immersion. This beautiful step acts as an external symbol of a heart burial with Jesus Christ and a joyous resurrection into a renewed, spiritual life.
The Church Community
The church is not a physical building, but a covenant body of believers united by the Holy Spirit. We believe in the priesthood of all believers and the absolute structural independence of our local Plainfield church family.
Eternal Hope
We live with the confident, joyful assurance that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly. Those who walk in covenant fellowship with Him will enjoy eternal life in the unbroken presence of the Father.
* 7 * The Sacred Gift of the Sabbath Day
We lovingly observe the biblical seventh day of the week—Saturday—as the sacred Sabbath of God. Instituted at the creation of the world, codified in the Ten Commandments, and consistently honored by Jesus and the early apostolic church, the Sabbath is a perpetual sign of our covenant relationship with our Lord.
For Seventh Day Baptists, keeping the Sabbath is never an oppressive obligation or a requirement to achieve salvation. Instead, we view it as a grand act of love, a beautiful gift of grace, and a weekly opportunity to cease from our standard daily occupations. It frees our spirits to focus entirely on genuine worship, physical rest, and deep human fellowship.
"The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." — Mark 2:27-28
